Obama Isn't Black Enough

He looks pretty dark compared to his mom.

Our favourite golden boy, Barack Hussein Mussolini Obama is finally getting some negative press. Apparently the hip thing to question about him is his blackness. Here's a line from Stanley Crouch:

So when black Americans refer to Obama as "one of us," I do not know what they are talking about.

You don't know what they're talking about? Maybe they're talking about someone who is a descendant of Africans, and whose skin makes him a target of racism from time to time? Was his great-great-great-grandaddy a slave? Probably not. But quick, take 5 minutes and think of all the former U.S. Presidents who can claim to be descendants of slaves. Not exactly the mile-high club, is it?
But I have my issues, too. I was going to vote for John Edwards, but he just isn't white enough. He was the son of a mill worker, the product of a long line of poor Southern white folk. Were his ancestors plantation owners? Probably not. Therefore, he is not white enough for me. I want a candidate who shares my experience of feeling guilty because we know some of our ancestors owned slaves. That white guilt makes me what I am today. How much guilt can one have if you grew up dirt poor? Not to mention that he tans really well, what's up with that? Didn't he get the memo that Presidents (and Supreme Court Justices and Senators) are supposed to have nicknames like "Whitey," "Snowball," and "Frosty Skin?" He's dark enough to be Greek, or, even worse Italian! Now Gerald Ford, that was a man white enough for my vote.
One final note on this. Most Presidents are former Senators or Governors. Here's a quick rundown of the racial breakdown of these elected positions since Reconstruction (1860's and 70's, for you non-history buffs):
Senators:
Whites: 1298*
Blacks:4 + "Not Black Enough" Obama

Governors:
Whites: 783*
Blacks: 2

*Too many to count, so it's just a guesstimate
