While taking a cab to pick up some documents at the Office of the Federal Register, I suddenly came up with a brilliant idea: hybrid taxi cabs. If any driver is going to make up the roughly $4,000 difference in cost of hybrid vehicles, it is cab drivers, who typically work shifts of 150-300 miles. Unfortunately for me, (but good news for everyone else) this idea has actually already been started in some cities, most notably New York and San Francisco. So my question is this; if it can work on the hilly streets in San Francisco, and the gridlock of New York, why not D.C.? Cab drivers love it because they pay for gas out of their own pocket, and riders will love it because it is more environmentally friendly, and could potentially lead to lower fares in the future if everyone started using them. I would even go so far as to propose the city adds a $0.25 surcharge on hybrid taxis to further encourage their introduction. In a city with such high gas prices and such a screwy cab fare system it is at least worth a try.
